What is granite?

Countertop Gallery

Granite is a course-grained igneous rock that forms deep below the earth's surface. Large crystals of quartz, feldspar, mica and other minerals contribute to the color and texture of the stone.

Granite is a very hard, durable decorative stone. Because of its high compressive strength and durability, granite has long been used for massive structures like monuments and decorative buildings.Granite's rich colors and low maintenance make it an ideal choice for flooring and counter tops, as well as exterior applications. Synthetic materials are no match for the richness, depth, and durability of granite.Granite is highly resistant to abrasions, chips, scratches, and extreme heat.It is also impervious to stains, molds, and mildew.

Marble

What is Marble?

Marble Samples

Marble is a limestone rock that has undergone heat and pressure changing it to a metamorphic crystalline rock.Marble is primarily composed of calcite, dolomite or a combination of both. The texture depends on the size of the mineral grains. Calcite and dolomite marbles are generally white in color. Variations of the color are due to impurities which form streaks and clouds.

Marble is a very elegant stone. Its beauty, originality and versatility allow it to be used in many applications such as floor tiles, wall tiles, fireplaces, columns, water tables, steps, thresholds and windowsills.

Tile

Ceramic tile - clay, gypsum, or porcelain material, finished by kiln firing. Ceramic tile can be glazed or unglazed.

Mosaic Tile -small ceramic mounted on a backing for ease of installation, commonly used to create designs for walls and floors.

Mexican pavers - a handmade, terra cotta fired clay tile, often unglazed and tumbled.

Natural stone tile - any natural stone can be cut into tiles for various applications.

Limestone

What is limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock primarily composed of the minerals calcite and aragonite and often contains fossils. Limestone was formed at the bottom of ancient seas when layers of organic material settled to the bottom over millions of years. The heat and pressure compacted the sediments. The ancient seas dried up leaving the solid limestone in its place.

Limestone is ideal for today's more casual and comfortable environments. The soft neutral colors have a look of Old World charm. Limestone can be polished, but is more commonly known for its mate, tumbled and natural finishes. Limestone is suitable for a wide range of applications, including floor tiles, wall tiles, fireplaces, columns, windowsills, and steps.

Travertine

What is travertine?

Travertine is formed from hot spring water penetrating up through underground limestone. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind layers of dissolved limestone and other minerals, giving it its banded appearance. Travertine stones are generally light-colored beiges and tans. Travertine is generally filled with grout before it is honed or polished, which produces a uniform surface more like other marbles. Unfilled travertine is also quite beautiful, and is often seen as exterior surfaces of buildings. Travertine is generally used for floors, walls, countertops, fireplaces and for outside applications.

Slate

What is slate?

Slate was formed from the compression of clays over thousands of years. The heat and pressure resulted in chemical changes (metamorphism) of the clay into slate. The best known characteristic of slate is its ability to split perfectly in one direction. The stone's natural cleavage can expose beautifully textured surfaces. Slate can have a variety of color - earthy browns, beiges, yellows, black, dark-grays, greenish-gray, pinks, purples and copper. They exhibit many variations even in the same quarry. The lively colors and unique texture make slate appropriate for interior as well as exterior applications.
